Bibi Gurbachan Kaur Mann- An educationalist par exellecnce

Bibi Gurbachan Kaur Mann was a socially active blind philanthropist hailing from village Talanian. Being blind was no handicap for this progressive and saintly lady. Infact, she passed her Giani level Punjabi exam, therefore she was fondly called ‘ Bibiji Giani’. Besides being proficient in Punjabi, she also had a good knowledge Sanskrit, Persian, Hindi and English. First at her ancestral village Mananwala, District Sheikhpura( now in Pakistan) and after partition in village Talanian she ran a free hostel for poor, needy and handicapped girls.

She had gone and met Mahatma Gandhi at Wardha, who guided her to work for dissemination of education specially among women. She founded the Mata Gujri Govt. Senior Secondary School and Mata Gujri College at Fatehgarh Sahib. From early fifties upto 1973, the year of her death, any village in the region that wanted to found a school would approach her for the purpose. With all the resources and influence at her disposal, she would get the school founded. Today, innumerable schools in the region founded by her initial effort are being run by the government .

It was because of her foresight, despite being blind, that she selected Prof. Niranjan Singh, a great educationalist and younger brother of the Sikh political leader Master Tara Singh to be the first Pricnipal of the M.G. College. Later, recognized Sikh scholars like Prof. Sant Singh Sekhon and Prof. Sujan Singh headed this institution. Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra had great regard for her and during her lifetime worked in close proximity with her for social and educational upliftment of the the region. District Fatehgarh Sahib remembers her with all the reverence.
